We
are excited to announce the transition of the Yakima Greenway's EAGLE earth
day from its traditional timing in April for the past 18 years to October
9, 2008. Since it will not be on Earth Day we decide to change
the title of the event to Yakima Greenway Rivers Festival which
is concomitant to EAGLE here at the Yakima Greenway.
The Yakima Greenway path parallels two major rivers, the Yakima and Naches.
EAGLE which stands for Environmental Awareness Greenway Led Education will
now be celebrated at the Yakima Rivers Festival on October 9, 2008. This event is going to be isolated to 4th and 5th grades only to connect
grade specific GLE (Grade Level Expectations) for both grades. Each exhibitor
will have between two and five key evidence of learning objectives that the
students will document and leave the event with. ESD105 has offered the exhibitors
various tools that they can use to engage the students in actual experiments
during the event.
Please see Poster Contest page for the
poster contest rules, dates and great prizes. This year due to a time constraint
the poster contest will be limited to this school year's 4th grade classes
only. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call Jeff Brantner
at the Yakima Greenway Foundation, (509) 453-8280 or email jeff@yakimagreenway.org.
About E.A.G.L.E.
E.A.G.L.E. (Environmental Awareness Greenway Led Education) Earth Day was
developed in the Spring of 1989 as an opportunity for Yakima County students
to learn about the environment. The program's goals are to promote skills
and attitudes which will enhance knowledge of the natural environment and
to reduce our future rate of vandalism by investing our young citizens
with a sense of ownership and pride in the Greenway.
Each year, we invite environmental agencies and advocates to display
information, conduct hands-on sessions, and share their knowledge with
the students. Students learn about recycling, pollution, endangered species,
acid rain, the greenhouse effect, and much more.
