RIVER FLOODING

Recent high water on the Yakima River and Naches River have impacted the Yakima Greenway. In many areas, floodwaters overtopped the path, leaving long stretches underwater and causing significant damage as the water receded.

Flood Damage to the Path

Large sections of the pathway have been undercut by the river, requiring major repairs to restore safe access. We will need to rebuild and stabilize damaged areas, bring in new gravel, and reinforce vulnerable sections of the trail to prevent further erosion. In several locations, the existing path base has been compromised and could need to be fully replaced.

River Landings Hit Hard

Our boat landings were hit hard with Harlan Landing taking major damages. The boat launch and surrounding park were heavily covered with debris, and floodwaters caused noticeable damage throughout the area. Restoring Harlan Landing will involve major cleanup efforts, equipment, and materials to clear debris, repair damaged areas, and ensure safe river access for the community once again.

Washed-Out Path

To keep the Greenway safe and open long term, these areas will require additional reinforcement, including deeper gravel sections, edge stabilization, and structural support designed to withstand future high water events. This work is essential to protect the integrity of the path, ensure public safety, and preserve reliable access for walkers, runners, cyclists, families, and Greenway employees.

Ongoing Cleanup Efforts

Our Greenway crew is working tirelessly to clean up the path and assess damage. Crews are removing heavy sediment, clearing debris, and documenting areas where the river has undermined the trail or access points. This kind of recovery takes significant time, specialized equipment, dedicated resources, and it places an unexpected strain on our maintenance budget.
