Wildlife Day at the Yakima Greenway is a new event this year focused on helping people of all ages learn more about nature, wildlife, and the river corridor. Designed to spark curiosity and stewardship, the day features the Salmon Bike Ride hosted by Salmon Safe, interpretive information at the Greenway Visitor Center, a family-friendly scavenger hunt, and plant and animal booths located throughout the Greenway. These interactive stations highlight species you may encounter while using the path and why protecting natural spaces matters. Wildlife Day is a great opportunity for families and adults alike to explore, learn, and connect with the landscapes and wildlife the Greenway helps preserve.

Salmon Bike Ride
The Salmon Bike Ride takes participants on a guided ride along the Yakima Greenway that mirrors the life journey of a salmon. As riders travel beside the river, the ride leader shares educational insights about each stage of a salmon’s life, connecting the story of the fish to the landscape around you. This immersive experience blends movement, learning, and the river itself, offering a unique way to understand the salmon’s journey and the importance of a healthy river corridor.

Scavenger Hunt
The Wildlife Day scavenger hunt invites families to explore the Yakima Greenway while searching for plants, animals, and natural features found along the river corridor. Participants can check off discoveries throughout the day as they move along the path, turning exploration into a fun, hands-on learning experience. The scavenger hunt encourages curiosity, observation, and a deeper connection to the Greenway’s diverse wildlife and habitats.

Visitor Center
Interpretive info
During Wildlife Day, the Greenway Visitor Center will feature interactive interpretive displays focused on the Yakima River and the wildlife that live in and around the Greenway. Families can explore educational information about local plants, animals, and river systems in a fun, engaging setting designed to spark curiosity and conversation. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the natural world that makes the Greenway such a special place to explore.

Plant & Animal booths
Outdoor plant and animal booths will be set up at select locations along the Yakima Greenway where wildlife is commonly seen, such as near beaver dams or eagle nesting areas. Each booth will be staffed by knowledgeable volunteers or educators who can share information about the plants and animals that live in these habitats and why they are important. These stops offer a hands-on, engaging way to learn while exploring the Greenway and observing wildlife in their natural setting.
